Deputy Premier Hon. Sean Astwood hasinitiated plans for a new housing policy to make homeownership more affordableand accessible for Turks and Caicos Islanders. The policy aims to assist withhome redevelopment, support individuals affected by storms who cannot rebuild,and provide pathways for first-time homeowners. A Housing Department is alsobeing established to lead these efforts, with the recruitment of a director andstaff currently underway.
Astwood shared that the housing policy willinclude innovative measures such as pre-designed home plans offered at minimalcost and expanded concessions to ease financial barriers. Similar to thecurrent homeowner’s policy, these initiatives will be designed to supportindividuals and families in achieving stable, quality housing. Additionally,the policy will collaborate with private sector developers to encourageprojects that align with the government’s vision for affordable and accessiblehousing.
The Deputy Premier emphasized that the policy isstill in its early stages, with a public consultation planned once the firstdraft is complete. Legislative changes and additional announcements about thenew Housing Department are expected soon. This initiative is set to play acritical role in addressing housing needs and improving the standard of livingacross the Turks and Caicos Islands.
